We also went to Carthage Jail while we were there. Its about 40 minute away along the county roads. The drive along the Mississippi is rather pretty.

Carthage has been redone too. Along the way they have quotes about Joseph Smith and Hyrum.

Here are our cuties by the statue of them.

The Jail is attached to the house. It is terribly dark in it and its no wonder that the family living there did not put Joseph Smith and the men there. The family had pity on them, knowing they weren't really criminals, and put them in the top bedroom.

While upstair the guide tells about the house, story of why Joseph Smith was there, what happened, and then plays a reenactment of the night he was murdered.

To bad the shadows are so drastic. This is a lovely shot of the Smith brothers and the house behind them. Its a very quiet place and very reverent. Our kids all asked questions and wanted to know more. I am glad that Emma and Lucas are finally getting old enough to understand some things.

After that we drove back to Nauvoo and went to the Family Living Center. It basically shows how families lived in Nauvoo. How they made candles, baked bread, farmed, etc...

Bev and Jim were working there and got to take us all on the tour. This is a bustle oven. They would put their arm in to test the heat.

Jake did not want to sit so we got a personal one-on-one time with Grandpa making rope. He loved it.

Later on the others joined us and Emma got to be the helper.

Later we went to one of Jim and Beverly's shows. They are in Sunset and Rendezvous. This is Rendezvous. We will have to visit again and see the Sunset one.

They have a fun part where they say lines to music and a certain beat. Not sure what its called. They did pretty well.

The whole play is about Life in Nauvoo and then preparing to leave when Joseph Smith died.

Here is the end and of course all the kids wanted to touch them as they went by. Bev never once smiled on stage at our kids. She said it was so hard! But they stayed in character the whole time.

Outside we all got to great them. They had one more show to do so we went on the Trial of hope.

Lucas bought a harmonica at the Red Brick Store. He was so cute with it. The kids played the pied piper with it. He would say ' now everyone who hears has to jump up and down ' and all the kids did it if they heard the notes. That kept them busy for a while.

While waiting in line the young performing missionaries sang a medley of hymns. These guys and gals apply for a performing mission, its is only four months long and they can be older. They perform all the plays and vingettes around Nauvoo. Then after the summer, they are released and go home.
